Australian wildfires and their impact on people’s lives

A very moving account from our Thrive Australia Managing Director Alex Christou about the Australian wildfires and their impact on people’s lives:

"Our country is on fire. Unprecedented bushfires have taken a hold in the states of Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland. Our major cities including Melbourne and Sydney are choking in the ash and smoke from the fires, our sky glows red and our hospitals are overflowing with patients suffering either burns or respiratory issues.

My family and many others have had to temporarily leave our homes for cleaner air. Temperatures continue to reach 116 degrees Fahrenheit making it incredibly difficult for our fire fighters and emergency services.

What’s become clear and hit us hard in Australia is that climate change is real. What’s happening in Australia is a window in to what is likely going to take place in many parts of the world if we don’t act now. From the Amazon to Athens and from California to the Congo we’ve seen the trajectory and intensity of fires worsening each year."
