President Obama at the Education Benefit Gala

On December 14, I had the extraordinary privilege of moderating a conversation with President Obama at the Education Benefit Gala. What an epic experience.

First, when we met backstage, he asked how often I moderated conversations. I told him it was my second time ever. He then just smiled kindly and said, “Don’t worry, it will be a relaxing chat. “ A class act.

My guest was charming, erudite, philosophical. The conversation ran the gamut from climate change (despite the US government withdrawing from the Paris agreement, American corporations are taking their own initiatives on climate) to work life balance as POTUS (having a great partner like Michelle is key and living above the shop, aka the White House, made it an easy commute) to the disconcerting tribalism that pervades global politics today (history doesn’t move in a straight line, sometimes there is a step backwards before we move forward again).

Upon leaving office President Obama and Michelle had set up the Obama Foundation. The Foundation is focused on helping develop young leaders globally. When I asked for his parting message to the change makers in the room, he put it quite simply, give time to mentor the next generation because that will make a difference.
