The World's Largest Exchange, Coinbase Firefox Attacked by A Hacker.
Targets employee personal computers--first successful blocking defense
Coinbase, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, reportedly detected a cyber attack targeting employee personal computers and stopped the hacker attack. The attack was reportedly far from direct customer asset leakage but it was a primary attack attempting to test the possibility of hacking the security system.
Philip Martin, a member of Coinbase's security team who successfully blocked the hacker attack, described the series of incidents on his social networking site.
He said, “the hacker took advantage of the so-called Zero Day--a weakness from Firefox and attempted two counts of cyberattacks on the Coinbase Exchange`s employees’ personal computers on Wednesday. However, we succeeded in blocking both attacks.”
Coinbase has reported such vulnerability to Firefox and is tracking down the attacker.
In addition, there was no damage from the primary attack to identify the security system of the coinbase exchange, rather than targeting customers. But if the attack was successful, the hacker would have been able to break into the back end of the coinbase exchange and steal funds from the exchange. Such an intrusion has led to multiple cases in the past, leading to the outflow of funds from the cryptocurrency exchange.
Currently, CoinBase operates top-class security teams and security systems in the industry, but the exchange's security measures are even more necessary as the industry’s key player, Binance was hacked last month.
